AIR ARCHITECTURE
Langley Vale Woodland Centre, Surrey

A competition entry with civil and consulting engineers WL2 (short listed for RIBA Stirling Prize 2016) to provide a visitor centre.

The circular hub is backed up by a single storey stucture which provides storage, office facilities and toilets. The structure forming the hub comprises a green Reciprocal frame supported via a curved steel ring beam spanning between a group of sensitively positioned green timber columns. The contemporary artisanal but hi - tech form of the Reciprocal frame represents the form of a tree canopy thus forming a strong spiritual / visual connection between a forest and the enclosed visitor space. This is accentuated by the ever present shading produced by the timber structure which will constantly change as a result of changes in the position and strength of the sun and moon as they shine through the treated glass roof above.
